Many teachers of the English language, both young and old at secondary school level are faced with the uphill task of designing a course structure. They often find designing a progression as a real Herculean task. As a secondary school student, I took English language courses with teachers who in most cases used just the prescribed textbooks page after page.

The steadfast force of globalization challenges the structures of local groups, nation-states, and societies. The cultural and economic connections between contrasting social groups require a mutually understood language for communication; whether through translators or an individual’s knowledge. In most cases, such as the United Nations, other political entities, and corporations, a common language is determined to facilitate communication. Sumerian, Greek, and French were languages deemed as the Lingua Francas in the past. As a result, political and economic connections began to flourish across regions. In this current era, the English language is the default language for communication between people... [Read more]

English language learning plays a big role in international education, and globalization has pushed English to evolve into a global language (Crystal, 2003). In his book, English as a Global Language, Crystal acknowledges that while multilingualism remains a critical world resource, he argues that a common language is still necessary. In an increasingly interconnected world, a global language connects nations and individuals on an international field. International education serves to promote global awareness and engagement, international understanding, respect for differences, and commitment to peace (Tate, 2013). English as a global language is necessary to fulfill the purpose of international education because... [Read more]

English is learned and spoken by a large number of people worldwide. In Shakespeare's time, the number of English speakers in the world is thought to have been between five and seven million. According to linguist David Crystal, "Between the end of the reign of Elizabeth I (1603) and the beginning of the reign of Elizabeth II (1952), this figure increased almost fiftyfold, to around 250 million" (The Cambridge Encyclopedia of the English Language, 2003). It's a common language used in international business, which makes it a popular second language for many. English as a global language has made it impossible for cultural diversity to develop. English is easy to learn, has a high usage rate, is universal in... [Read more]

We can also find many public schools in countries like China that teach English from people’s childhood. This essay tries to make the potential of English clearer. As a result, people who are absolute beginners of English or who are going to teach those beginners will have a map and a compass in mind to refer to about the motivation for language learning on their way to the future.

English, like any language, is first and foremost the mother tongue of a person. Languages often are influenced by or entirely derive from migratory groups of people. The original native tongue of France, for example, was Gallic. The Latinized French we know today was only born after centuries of Roman occupation and assimilation. More confusing still, the nation takes its name from the Franks, who were themselves a Germanic tribe which conquered the territory from Rome. Despite this, their native German tongue had an only minor influence on French, as Roman Gaul had a quite large population.

Today, the big planet earth has become a small global village and the sovereign barriers seem to have disappeared. Technological innovations have left no stone unturned in converting the dreams into reality, where people from any part of the universe can come on a common platform to interact and chat with each other. But, no communication of this magnitude is possible without a common medium of conversation. Therefore, as global communication expands, so does the need for a common Global Language. The term “Global Language” can be better described as a language, which is spoken internationally and is the prime medium of instructions universally.

The topic “English As A Global Language” is an interesting one given that people in all the continents of the world are learning the English language to become apt in writing, speaking, reading, and listening even though these different countries have their different languages and mother tongue. At times it’s to the detriment of the languages or the dialects of these countries leading to the disappearance or extinction of some of these languages. This is the case with most African countries where children no longer speak the mother tongue or the dialect but the English language because it’s the language of instruction and socialization in schools. English is a language that, like other languages, has a rich history dating back thousands of years. Sort of mash-up of ancient Germanic languages and Roman Latin, English is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world thanks to the spread of British and American influence across the world over the last several hundred years. It is a tricky language, infamous for its many exceptions and grammatical nuances. While English, compared to some languages, has a relatively low variation between regional dialects (low enough for speakers of radically different dialects to understand each other at least partially), these differences can be significant enough to confuse someone who is learning English as a...
