When I was still studying at the secondary level and about to enter college, a lot of people asked me if I was sure about my decision to take education as my course. Here in the Philippines, teachers do not get a high salary despite doing a lot of paperwork and a very stressful job. Maybe this is the reason why they asked me about my chosen profession and even I asked myself too, but I love to help. Being a teacher is not just about teaching lessons from the book and completing what must be supposed to be accomplished in the objectives of the lesson plan. The word “teacher” is very broad and everyone should be aware of that. Like what I said, the teacher’s job is not just to teach but to mold, to mold... [Read more]

Well, before starting this summative task and as I was going through the list of topics, I noticed this one…TEFL for non-native English speaking teachers (N°30) and thought: that’s the one I want to talk about.
Yes, I am a non-native English speaker and months ago, I have given to my life a completely different orientation, leaving behind nearly a 30 years career spent in the financial and business fields. As being one important step included in this global professional and personal project, I decided to apply for a TEFL course and graduate in June 2019. However, before committing to the ITTI TEFL course and even until now, I am still reflecting upon what TEFL means for a non-native English speaking teacher.... [Read more]

J.K. Rowling, the brilliant author of the Harry Potter series, is extremely talented and her writing encouraged young adults and children to enjoy reading. This, however, does not necessarily mean that she will be equally successful if asked to teach writing to a group of students. Teaching requires specific skills of its own. The way a teacher manages a classroom can undoubtedly affect how many students in that class learn.

What does cultural sensitivity mean? According to Southeastern University, cultural sensitivity means “being aware that cultural differences and similarities between people exist without assigning them a value.” Therefore, a teacher should refrain from assigning a particular value, such a better or worse and good or bad, to any activity or interaction. It is important to be aware that both the teacher and the student(s) carry certain cultural norms, and a level of respect with these differences in culture is vital for student success. As such, how does a teacher incorporate cultural awareness into their classroom curriculum?

As a Spaniard in love with languages, I can’t start this essay without saying anything other than, "it’s not who the teacher is, but the will of teaching that they have". Through all these years of learning English, I just know for sure that a learner learns more when they live in and with the language throughout each day. They need to become hooked to it, and it does not matter if the person who transmits this feeling is a native speaker or not.

The nature of the job as a teacher is that we are presented with a vast range of individuals with a unique constitution.
This, in turn, means that every student will respond and behave differently in the classroom. The spectrum is vast: From the student who is “all in” and engages in every single, ever so small activity and raises their hand to each question. To the student who remains silent the entire lesson and if asked to e.g. read a text out loud, will read so quietly that it is barely audible. Our job as a teacher is to respond to our students according to their needs and their character. What does that mean exactly? From personal teaching experience, I have found that not only does every student have a... [Read more]

Growing up you learn whether or not you are a test taker, you will find those who do amazing on tests but do not really pay attention in class, you will also find those who get really nervous and struggle but still do well, and you also find the ones who... How do we start to learn a language? - With words. Little babies first say single words and only in some period of time they start saying sentences. So teaching vocabulary is one of the most important things in learning a foreign language. If we imagine language as a tree, grammar is a trunk of the tree and vocabulary is its leaves.

To answer the question of what is effective classroom management it is firstly important to define what is meant by “classroom management”. ITT defines classroom management as: “the skill of organizing and managing the class, having a friendly, relaxed manner and maintaining disciple” (page 2, unit 5, ITT course content – which is also referenced throughout the below essay)
To best answer this question, we shall now break this definition down into 3 parts before providing an overall conclusion at the end of the essay.

A classroom can be a daunting environment for a teacher. They have been placed as the responsible leader of a classroom, and it is their duty to ensure that the students leave with something. Specifically, in an ESOL classroom, teachers feel that there is a lot of pressure to not fail the students. To assuage this anxiety, teachers must find security in their confidence. They have trained, and they have the knowledge to succeed. By relying on the information that they know, they can create a learning environment that provides comfort for everyone.

Classroom management is the skill of organizing and managing a class to ensure that students can learn effectively. There are many different methods teachers can use to create an environment that will help students learn, such as classroom arrangement, conducting yourself correctly, grouping students in a sensible way for each task, and also establishing a good rapport with students. Motivation has become a big subject in recent years. What does it mean to motivate? For me to motivate does not mean to scream on somebody or push somebody. To motivate simply means to provide a motive. Provide a reason WHY.
When we look at motivation from a more scientific perspective we shall not ignore the concept of external and internal motivation.
As teachers, we should be able to understand the basic psychology of our students. If we understand what are the motives and the drives we are more likely to adjust our teaching to their needs. To be able to understand the real desires and fears, we should listen carefully, only with the good analysis we may help to better articulate their WHYS.
