When I started teaching English 25 years ago, I honestly did not know what I was doing. I naively assumed that it was enough to know the language myself. But soon I came to understand, that there was definitely more to teaching.

My first student ever was brought to me at the tender age of eight months and his mother’s aim was to get him accepted in a bilingual kindergarten. Since I already had children of my own at that time, I could easily deal with the situation.
But soon after that, I was asked to teach a group of children aged six, and at first, I found it very hard to keep them from continuously using their native tongue during the lessons. At some point,... [Read more]

Not only do they interact with their teachers every day in the classroom but the quality of that interaction matters for our students’ future. Especially, English teachers especially need the following qualities.
Kind teachers always believe in their students. For them, teaching is not a business, it is a relationship. They are warm and always ready to listen and share their opinions with the students. They devote countless hours to ensuring students can work successfully. They often encourage their students to express themselves. This would be a great end or start- of- the- day... [Read more]

Good communication skills, I can say this is an important quality someone can be so educated but communication skill zero so the education can be useless. Communication skills like visual, nonverbal, verbal by using body language, speaking and so many more. The biggest part of the classroom is communication. Also explaining well if there are activities or assignments and also a good teacher through communication will know which student does not understand and will make an effort to talk to the student and help him or her individually.

Here are the 5 common types of EFL students and how to deal with them in the classroom.
Every teacher loves students who are eager to learn and enthusiastic about your lesson. However, there’s often a student in a class that demonstrates his/her eagerness in a destructive and disruptive way. This student may call out all the answers to your questions before raising their hand or end up telling you all... [Read more]

We all played them and we all loved them as children. We made them up and we bought them. It is still a large industry today. There are easy ones and hard ones. There are thinking ones and action ones. What am I referring to? Games! From hide-and-go-seek to Monopoly, there are all sorts of fun games to play. So why don’t we incorporate them into our TEFL lessons?

Since I previously worked as an English teacher in China, I also have my own experience. What is important to me as a teacher? First of all, the personality of the child. He's a human, and I want him to stay that way. Therefore, I need to teach this person to learn, not just to know and be able, but to teach him to use knowledge for the benefit of himself and those around him. Knowledge is a power that can destroy and create. And the child learns to make a decision and be responsible.

Teaching-and-learning is always interactive and intercommunicate. When sitting in a classroom, a student has been part of relationship-building, with teachers as well as with other students. How to establish rapport is therefore important. Who doesn’t love a story? Stories are universal. Stories connect us all. Stories also transcend caste, creed, color, and age. Just like any other muscle in the body, the brain requires exercise to keep it strong and healthy, so the phrase “use it or lose it” is particularly apt when it comes to your mind. The more knowledge you have, the better-equipped you are to tackle any challenge you’ll ever face. Good readers excel at life, conversely those that can’t read end up in dire circumstances.

Anything that grows on its own is considered wild and it can cause tremendous damage to anything around it, and the same applies to students. Look at how weeds badly affect any good crop. Failure to correct students will inevitably lead to self-destruction that will eventually affect innocent students or even leads to a rebellion in class. In short, bad behavior corrupts good morals.

There are many things I have learned over my thirty-plus years teaching students full time in classrooms, ranging from primary grades 2-5 and in junior high and high school. However, one of the most crucial things a teacher needs in the face of young and older learners is confidence! If the students suspect that the teacher has no idea what they are doing, it can be detrimental to the lesson and the teacher's ability to control the classroom situation. Having a confident teacher brings positivity to the classroom and comfort among the students that they are going to learn something valuable. Throughout my career, I wore many hats to grow... Even though my teaching experiences are limited to one culture, Korea, still they are all very special and unique in their own ways. I started my journey as an EFL teacher a couple of years ago, thinking that I could learn other languages myself. I thought that I would move from place to place, possibly different countries, and learn different languages and get various teaching experiences in different settings. However, it turned out to be Korea only. I could soak up Korean culture and learn the language more easily because of my origin. The more time I spent teaching, the more I got to love teaching children and feeling... [Read more]
