I have gained a lot from this course. Going in I felt that I had a strong grasp of the english language, but I did not know the theory behind any of the grammatical rules or how to categorize the information that I knew. Everything is natural to me as a native english speaker, so it was important to get a refresher on grammar so that I would actually be able to teach it. I also feel that the grammar units will be good material for me to review later in my tefl career.
I also feel like I have gained some good knowledge on how to lesson plan and teach classes. I did not have knowledge beforehand on how to manage a classroom or organize lessons. The ITTT course really emphasized lesson planning, including lesson plan tasks in about half of the units—not just the unit on lesson planning itself. I felt like this not only helped me learn how I will need to apply the material, but it also helped prepare me for what I will have to do once I start teaching.
The course also really pushed me to be creative. Aside from the lesson plans that I had to create, many of the tasks required me to make activities that relate to the material. I feel that I will be able to look back and use some of the ideas from my course once I actually start teaching. The course also stressed the importance of being creative and engaging students. Rather than just teaching the material, I learned that I should also be trying to get the students interested in it.
