Teaching English in India is conducted mainly on a volunteer basis and many agencies provide placement for qualified TEFL teachers on an unpaid basis. Paid positions still remain plentiful but competition for such employment is high, most notably in the business field. A degree specific to the education field and a lot of practical teaching experience will provide a clear advantage, in addition to a TEFL or equivalent certificate. It is by no means unusual for employment in India to be on a 6 days a week basis working for a total of 20 to 25 hours during that time.
Indian nationals typically pay teachers a great deal of respect and admiration as knowledge is regarded highly in Indian culture. Students therefore feel an added cultural reason to gain as much knowledge through learning as possible. Due to the fact that India was a former colony of the British Empire, English is already widely spoken throughout the country. Teaching jobs are therefore harder to come by and schools usually prefer teachers looking to stay for long periods of time. Aside from this drawback there are many language schools in India and even more so in the larger cities.
When starting out on your search for employment it is of the utmost importance to first have your papers in order. Employment can quite often start on a part-time or night-time basis. Corporate training is also a good way to start your teaching career in India but invariably requires qualification and/or experience in the field of commerce or business. Similarly in the BPO industry teachers may obtain a job as a speech or accent trainer or as a soft skill trainer to strengthen the use of appropriate interview skills, dress code, overall manners and politeness etc.
