The Country

Spain is one of the most sought after teaching destinations not only because of the easy-going lifestyle and warm climate, but also because work is readily available to qualified English language teachers. The majority of jobs are for teaching younger students but adult and business classes are also plentiful. There are a huge number of teaching opportunities in the larger cities in Spain, the only negative factor being that it is more difficult to obtain employment in Spain for non-EU citizens as regulations are implemented strictly. For this reason it is also harder for US nationals to obtain teaching positions in Spain, but a good degree of determination, patience and input, with some savings to fall back on, should stand you in good stead to see you through the process.

It is easier to obtain employment in Spain by physically being in the country. Schools like to interview applicant teachers in person so they can get an overall perception of how their students will react to a particular individual. Our advice is to pick your location and travel there first. Bigger cities have a higher demand for teachers but also a greater supply. If it is your wish to teach English in Spain it is advisable to also take your TEFL Certification course there as TEFL schools in Spain have a myriad of contacts and inside information which will assist you in this respect.

Payment is made on a monthly basis but you will be required to pay a months rent and a bond in advance. It is also worthwhile to keep your eye on notice boards and local publications for room share adverts.

The academic year starts in October so you are advised to arrive in Spain by August or September at the latest. Many schools fill their teaching vacancies on a last minute basis so persevere throughout these months.

Any understanding of the Spanish language will be a huge advantage when teaching English in Spain. You will need to speak some Spanish for your day to day needs while living in Spain and it is also a great way to meet people.
