In the Philippines, English is one of the main subjects in schools. It is divided in two parts, 'Reading and Language'. It even takes more time in learning it than our mother tongue, as other main subjects like Maths and Science were strictly in English, and as we move to higher level of education almost all subjects were in English. This is why in my country with hundreds of dialects due to its archipelago, most of the Filipinos visiting other provinces, English is the more practical way of communicating to understand each other. Aside from Filipino language, English is also the official language in my country. With my experience in education field as an Executive Assistant to the Principal in an International School abroad, it enabled me to work with in an English working environment, where I have learnt a lot working closely with the Principal, specially correcting teacher's term reports. What I have stated above were just the obvious facts about my experience in English language. And to why I want to pursue a career in TEFL even though that most of the companies would prefer someone who's native speaker, I believed that teaching is not about which language you speak, sure it is since the 'English' language is to be taught but isn't it more of how dedicated one is and whether they have a genuine interest in teaching or helping their students? What is really the role of the teacher? There is no doubt there are disadvantages as a non native English speakers which are the following: the non-native accent or non-native pronunciation, vocabularies, idioms, proverbs and some native speakers expressions. And to argue on each of that, in terms of the native accent or native pronunciation, isn't it the language we're teaching and not how it should sound? The goal is to teach the proper way of pronouncing it. For vocabularies, idioms and proverbs those are in dictionaries and nowadays searchable through online. And now for the advantages of a non native English speaker, as an ESL myself, non native English speakers can understand the students difficulties in learning, some can be better in teaching grammar, and could be a great model too, if we can do it, they surely can do it too. The important matter in teaching is that the student learns. And there's no really big difference between the native and non-native English speakers, it's the dedication of the teacher that matters. Living in France gave me some difficulties adjusting to the society and finding job is almost impossible, so I studied their language in a university and my life changed since then. I have worked in a nursery school as an English referent and I loved it, since then I decided to acquire proper certificates to have a wider job opportunities. I am pursuing a career to be an ESL teacher as my way of sharing my experience to my future students, to help them reach the other part of the world, to encourage them to not to be afraid of English, to make them realize the beauty of learning another language and finally because I have my dedication in teaching and these are my reasons why.
