Unit 3 covers the steps to take to develop courses for young learners. Prior to the start of a course, teachers need to conduct level testing to determine students’ language ability and determine placement into the correct level (e.g., Starter, Elementary, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, or Upper-Intermediate). After determining the language levels of their students, teachers should conduct a needs analysis to get an idea of the students’ past learning experiences, what situations they would be using their English in, and what they would like to focus their study on. A needs negotiation is then conducted, and a syllabus is created. Although there are a lot of factors influencing the type, style, and content of the syllabus, there is usually an introductory lesson, at least one progress test, and some time set aside for review. There should also be an end of course questionnaire to solicit student feedback on the efficacy of the course.
