I have chosen 220 hour advanced certificate in TEFL(Teaching English as a Foreign Language). In this, 120 hour TEFL along with one 50 hours of CTBE (Certificate in Teaching Business English) and one 50 hours of CTEYL (Certificate in Teaching English to Young Learners) is included. I had a very great experience learning from this course as it provided me with different aspects of teaching in a foreign country. I came to know about various teaching methods to be used during teaching. As my course started i was too conscious about each and everything from learning of my units to complete the tasks given at the end and tests after each unit. I personally felt that the tasks given at the end of each unit as appropriate because from that you can easily count on the learning of the content as it helps to revise. After that the tests will show you your performance as how well you’ve learned the content in the unit. I found that the content language used is easily understandable. The teacher plays a very important role in a students life. I knew this before but a teacher can be a manager, model, organizer, instructor, accessor, promoter, facilitator and so many other roles in a students life. I’ve learnt about the different parts of a speech, tenses. I came to know about the different methodologies used worldwide and among those the ESA (engage, study and activate) is used most frequently as it provides flexibility in teaching and is more student centered than teachers. It provides students to talk more and communicate with each other. Engage phase arouses the students interests and get them more involved in the lesson. Students find it more stimulating and fun if they are involved in a lesson. Games, pictures, music, stories, flash cards, etc can be used to do so. Study phase focuses more on the language part while activate stage allows students to talk and communicate as freely as possible using few/all vocabulary they know. I’ve learnt how to manage classes, how to maintain discipline, how feedback plays a vital role in students life, how I can arrange my classroom according to any activity and many other such questions. Lesson planning, examinations and evaluation, pronunciation and phonology are the various other topics which were discussed in their respective units in such a way that you can handle those in a good way. Through this course only, I get to know about various other examinations like TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC, Cambridge assessment. These topics were included in the 120 hour course. In the CTBE and CTEYL course I came to know how to deals with young learners and adults while teaching them. They both do have some advantages as well as disadvantages, but we have to incur from all that. Through this course, I came to know what preparations I have to make before going to any other country for teaching. Different cultural issues, political issues, taboo’s, myths, etc are the different consults that I have to make before starting my journey. So to pile up the things about my course experience I had a great fun with learning through this course and it provided me such a great opportunity to learn something different other than the course books. This course also provided me flexibility to learn anytime, anywhere. I found that very appreciating as I don’t have to make certain time shifts to study as I can do that anytime I want. I studied it while traveling as well.
