This unit provides a solid overview of the important parts teachers and students play in the language classroom. Providing an encouraging, professional instructional space is necessary for learning and teaching to take place. For example, teachers must be skilled at monitoring and adjusting their lessons by switching between the roles of Manager, Organizer, Prompter, Participant, etc... so that students can adjust to different activities (paired activities, large-group activities, etc...). No matter what, as a teacher, I must be able to switch between teaching roles to tailor my instructional practices to my students' needs. At times, I must take charge and lead, but I must also graciously step back and engage students to experiment with their language-learning endeavors. As I read this unit, I realized that I have limited experience in working with very young learners (pre-school aged children). However, I do not anticipate working with this student population as I am an instructor at a university. I am grateful for the reminders about the special life experiences my adult TESOL students bring to the classroom; I am thankful for their bravery and determination to learn a new language.
