In this unit I learned that different age groups of young learners learn differently. For example, for ages 4-6 they learn best with movement and song, however, for teenagers, they would not like this teaching theme, you would need to adapt to their interests, for example, pop songs. Games in the classroom are always fun and serves as an activity with a purpose and set of rules. Just about any game we used to play as kids can be adapted for the classroom. For example, Monopoly...you can change the property squares and chances into questions and give the student a house for correct answers, or no house for incorrect answers. Battleship is a good game for building vocabulary and Hangman is a great warmer and can be used for vocabulary and short phrases. The teacher can also use stories, which are great for all ages and arts & crafts, which would be used more for the younger learners. When planning your lesson plan, young learners probably only require 30 mins of lesson time due to their lack of focus and short attention span, whereas, 45 mins. is good for older young learners. The Engage and Practice phases are good for these types of lesson plans, as well as to incorporate TPR (Total Physical Response) for the younger learners.
