Presenting new language to ESL learners in the ESA stage of development must be done in a balanced and manageable way. Four ideas that the students must always get out of their lessons is: first, being exposed to the language, second understanding the meaning of the language, third how the language is constructed, and finally they must be able to practice and produce it. ESA methods can effectively introduce new language by taking advantage of straight arrow, boomerang, or patchwork structures.
