This unit encouraged me to think more clearly about the various roles students and teachers adopt during a English language class. These are more varied and complex than I had anticipated. I found it very helpful to learn that sometimes the classic role of teaching, i.e. standing before the class and presenting the English language, may not leave enough time for students to practice the language themselves. Too much of this presenting role might actually hinder the students' progression. I also found it interesting that too much prompting might inhibit independent learning by the students, sometimes they need to be given time and space to find answers for themselves. The various levels of motiviation one might encounter amongst various groups of students is alaso interesting. For example, the understanding that teenagers might not necessarily be all that mootivated to learn English, and that lessons would have to be developed and planned in such a way as to spark that interest and enthusiasm.
