Unit 1 defined what makes both a good teacher and a good learner. A good teacher should be kind, patient, love teaching and is able to motivate their students. While a good learner should have a willingness to listen to the language, a drive to experiment with English and a strong desire to ask questions when unsure about a subject. Learners are also categorized by their current ability to understand and comprehend the English Language from beginner to advanced. Each level of student brings a diverse skill set that the teacher must be prepared to adapt his/her methods for. Students also, bring unique learning experiences, motivation levels based upon age, a degree of social anxiety depending on cultural backgrounds, and other experiences. Unit 1 defined the different roles teachers could possibly take in the classroom such as the Prompter which focuses on gently encouraging the student when he/she is stuck on a concept.
