The unit involved teaching about the various roles that a teacher undertakes in the classroom. It placed emphasis on qualities that make a good teacher, as well as those that make a good learner. It provided useful thresholds for gauging a student's ability (beginner through to advanced) as well as formal classifications developed in Europe (Basic A1 etc). I feel the aspect of the course that was most useful to me was the consideration of cultural differences when teaching, such as the concept of a student losing face. In that regard, while acknowledging that correction is important, it is important that it must be done in a gentle and culturally sensitive way. Though that is only one example, the general principle of cultural consideration while teaching is clearly crucial while teaching English to non-native speakers.
