I have learned a lot in this unit about the ways in which teachers can be effective participants in a class. I originally only looked as teaching from the Controlled/Manager perspective and while I have employed many of the other types of teaching, I always saw them as second to the Controlling position. It is good now to look at them all as ways to be a good teacher rather than the latter ways as supplements to the Manager position. I also found the part about what makes a good learner useful as it encourages me to find ways to make students want to be a good learner. And as the unit says, good teachers bring about good learners. I think it was also very enlightening to see how adult and young students differ. It never really dawned on me that an adult would be more likely to try to match English to their native language rather than learn English in its own context. When I was learning French, I found it much more productive to think about French from a French perspective than to constantly be trying to match it to English.
