Unit 7 discussed vocabulary, grammar and functions in which grammar is described as the foundation or "tree trunk" and language is considered the branches. Vocabulary and functions could be compared to leaves often as diverse in shape and color as they are similar to leaves on the same tree. Using the ESA methods introduced in early units, a language instructor can learn how to effectively introduce new vocabulary, determine what students need to understand about the vocabulary they are learning, and enable students to build upon the vocabulary of the course to develop mastery of the language overtime. Along with introducing vocabulary comes the introduction of grammatical structures which will vary depending on the level of the class and the age of your students. When teaching language functions it is important to include terms that are appropriate for the kind of language you will be teaching your students. This can be determined by the kind of course you are teaching, whether it be formal language, informal or casual conversation, or more technical in nature.
