This lesson taught me important factors to consider when teaching students new vocabulary, grammatical structures and language functions. There are many factors that can affect how hard or easy a vocabulary word is for students to learn, such as, how similar is the word to their own language, how similar is the word to words they already know in English, the spelling and pronunciation of the word, and how appropriate and relevant is the word. Students need to know the meaning, usage, patterns and structure, and spelling/written form of both vocabulary words and grammatical structures. This lesson also provided different ideas for lesson plans, for the engage, study and activate phases for teaching students new vocabulary, grammatical structures and language functions.
