This unit talk about what aspects we need to pay attention to when teach a new language, that is, vocabulary, grammar and functions. In addition, the discussion also emphasizes the different focuses of teaching vocabulary, grammar and function, for example, when teaching vocabulary, teachers need to focus on the meaning, use, word grammar, interaction and so on. Focus may vary when it comes to the teaching of grammar and functions. Together with the above-mentioned discussion, it is very rewarding to be able to study the lesson plans shown in this unit. The lesson plans provide us with different teaching approaches like “straight arrow”, “boomerang” and so on when teaching vocabulary, grammar and functions. For me, in this unit, I am most impressed by how to select vocabulary to teach. When thinking about what words to teach, we have to take many factors into account. I also feel it is significant to take students’ learning purpose into consideration. Like what is talked about in this unit, frequency of vocabulary use in students’ life should be considered. Most of my students are adult learners and I believe it would be more motivating and more encouraging if my students would be able to use the new vocabulary they learned in the classroom more quickly and practically. When selecting new vocabulary, I would probably prioritize the word frequency.
