How to teach vocabulary, grammar, and functions. Grammar can be said to be the tree trunk and branches of a language while as words and vocabulary and functions make up the greenery, the green leaves. For a balanced approach and best results, all parts must be taught to students in a constructive and meaningful way. When teaching vocabulary, one should consider its appropriacy and usefulness to the students, teachability is important as well. A normal straight arrow ESA vocabulary lesson works well (Engage-Study-Activate), but there are many other ways as well. An ESA patchwork structured approach might work even better. When introducing new grammatical structures one should consider how meaningful and useful the structures are, not forgetting the forms and patterns of spoken and written language. ESA methodologies, both straight arrow and patchwork approaches, work here as well. A similar approach works for teaching language functions too, and appropriacy is very important as useful and meaningful phrases are easier to comprehend, put to use and remember.
