Most of the rules that apply to the present tense do apply for the past. The breakdown of the tenses is similar for both the present and the past tense i.e simple, perfect, continuous, perfect continuous. As a native speaker, you take for granted the rules that build up the English language. One key thing that I noted was that most common verbs in have an irregular simple past form ie. one that is not created simply by adding 'ed'.
