It is quite difficult today to imagine a country that would not have studied English as a second language. Therefore, it has been called «global language», even despite the fact that in many countries it is not considered as an official language. There are two opposing views in society as to whether English should continue to be adopted as a universal language worldwide. Some people are in favour, while others see this situation as dangerous. To understand this issue, I will give the arguments of both sides. The history of the English language is inextricably linked with the expansion of the British, who, for centuries colonising a number of countries, have spread their language around the world. This had a negative impact on the state of those countries where English came in this way. In addition, mention may also be made of language mortality, which is particularly pronounced in regions such as North America or Australia. In these countries, the existing indigenous population was simply absorbed or displaced by native English speakers, which eventually became dominant in these regions. Thus, the languages of these indigenous peoples are either extinct or threatened with extinction. To a lesser extent, this applies to other global languages such as Spanish or Chinese. This plays a fatal role for linguistic minorities, as often, along with language, whole cultures and religions are dying out, which are mainly transmitted in these languages. Also, there are just people who for various reasons do not speak English or other common language. And this can put them in an awkward position if most of their compatriots use the global language as a spoken language, which may lead to a cultural collapse. In my opinion, due to the convenience and ease of learning English, its penetration into all spheres of life greatly affects the speech of those countries where it is widely studied. The negative consequences of this phenomenon are borrowings, which literally "clog" the language. There are many terms and jargon, which sometimes complicates communication between generations. It is becoming fashionable to use English words, and they are increasingly appearing in spoken language. On the other hand, having a global language helps in communication. This especially helps those people whose occupation obliges them to visit different countries. It can also help large corporations where people of different nationalities work. English as an international language helps people of different nationalities from around the world discuss politics or arrange business meetings. For example, German and Italian businessmen can choose English as their mutual language of communication. English is easy to learn. It has one of the richest vocabulary in the world, but it has a simple grammar. The words themselves are attracted to each other, forming concise and clear sentences. The international language should be simple and clear to everyone, and English has such qualities. To sum up, I think every language that tends to be global has a controversial status due to the effect it makes towards another languages. Anyway, having English or any other language as a universal mean of communication, we must remember our own language because it is very close connected with our history, culture and traditions. If each nation lets influence their own language, it will risk to loose their own identity and finally put themselves on the brink of extinction in this huge and dynamic world.
