Coming and living in Brazil for a short time has shown me how important learning the English language is to many of the native Brazilians.Conversation English is extremely popular,along with business English.The population here knows that learning English will increase there chances in getting jobs,not only in there country,but also in other English speaking countries. The younger generation has adapted themselves to the social media and the different teaching tools available on the internet,also television and radio.American music is very popular here along with American television programs.As the internet has allowed many companies to cross borders,the demand for English has increased. Moreover,mostof the companies around world highly incourage there employees to know and understand English.One of the requirements in advertisement in hiring new workers is the ability to speak or write English.English is used as a language to communicate,may also help people to know,understand and respect each other particularly those who have different backgrounds such as languages,cultures lifestyles and etc.English as a world language,international language or global language communication may highly effectively avoid misunderstanding and misinterpretation among individuals.Many of the students I teach are business men and women and much of there communication is done by conference calls and by Skype.Correct English is extremely important,misunderstanding could cost the companies thousands of lost dollars.These men and women are a cross sections of cultures,so there English can be very different,many have learned British English and some have learned American English,along with there native accents,it can be trying for a new student.Here in Brazil English is taught in the public schools,but so little and very basic.The private schools teach it to a degree that the students have a fair knowledge of communication in English. There is a negative side to learning English, it can create discrimination,injustice and in equalities among those who speak it and those who don't and cannot write or speak English.One of the discriminations for example is that people are required to have very good English skills when theye apply for jobs. These people are likely to have positions that is more prestigious when they have competence in English than their native languages.English is imposed to become one of the compulsory subjects in schools globally. In contrast, English is seen as a connective instrument that link people world wide.Learning English is very important in this time we live in,but learning proper English should be at top. Many teachers encourage students to listen to television and cell phone videos, this is not always good bescause so much language is not proper English, and much of it is bad words. Many coutries and scholars was to debate wheather English is becoming the world language,but the proof is the business world. Finding proper teaching material is always a problem, so it is good if the teacher is crafty and a good imagination.Thus,people should not see English as a language that will bring disavantages, but as a language that will change countries cultures for the better. Also, English will not dominate some international medias such as CNN,BBC,MTVand etc. These medias are not only broadcast news in English but also some other major dominant languages such as spain,Arabic,Mandarin and etc. In other words,it is believed that these international medias are broadcast with different languages in order to attract a large number of viewers in the world.
