A teacher is not only responsible for teaching knowledge to his or her student’s, they also play a role as a facilitator, a mentor, a psychologist, a counsellor and a policeman. The role of the teacher is easier when he/she is teaching adults vs teaching adolescent because they tend to be more motivated, they are disciplined and they have life experience; thus making teaching easier for the teachers. The most important role for a teacher in the classroom is to teach and follow the school curriculum that meets policy guidelines. They are also responsible in creating a positive learning environment while encouraging student’s to do better. The teacher also acts as a coach to help student’s understand the subject matter, they organize the classroom by giving clear and concise instructions and they are there as a guide when their student’s don’t understand something in the subject that is being taught. At the beginning of the school year, it is important for teacher’s to provide a syllabus so that student’s understand what is expected from them throughout the semester or the year depending on where the subject is being taught. The syllabus is important because it provides information and expectations so that both the students and the teachers are aware of what subject will be covered and deadlines for essay’s or exams. The teacher role is to also do a lesson plan as this will give them a step by step guide so that they are able to organize their material so that they can deliver all the material that they intended the students to learn for the day. This can also be used as a guide by a substitute teacher if the teacher is not able to make it in that day. Although lesson planning is very important, the teachers have to keep in mind that in order for student’s to gain knowledge, they ned to be motivated and focused on the subject that is being taught in the classroom. This can be done by having student’s participate in activities and games that are classroom friendly and exams to access their knowledge. It is important to assess the knowledge of student’s throughout the year. A placement test will provide a guide for teachers so they can assess the student pre-existing knowledge. A diagnostic test determines how much the student already knows and what needs improvement. A progress test is to check what the student’s learned so far. As a teacher, I think that it important to know what they are coming in too and what needs improvement throughout the course. Teachers can use these tests as guide to understand what student learned and what subjects might need more time. A teacher is not only a role model, he/she is sometimes the other parent as they are often involved in decision making to help student’s with problems that might affect their learning environment or even decision-making to move on to higher education. A teacher’s role in the classroom can sometimes be frustrating because student’s learn at different pace. It is important to keep in mind that even though students are learning at a different pace, they are still gaining knowledge. If the teacher stays positive and encouraging this will build the student self esteem and will keep them motivated to do better next time.
