What does a Global Language mean? It means a common language for the world. People began to speak many centuries ago, and since then they have been speaking different languages. Every language reflects the soul, behaviour and temperament of each nationality. Peoples created their own alphabets and rules, but they always wanted to communicate with each other, to understand and to know more about each other. Languages help people to understand each other better, they help them to solve different economic and political problems, which stand before them, and so people learn foreign languages. So, why did English become a global language? English is extensively used as a second language and as an official language in over one hundred countries, it is the most widely taught and understood language in the world. English has over 500 million speakers. It is behind only Chinese. In some countries people use the various dialects of English regularly, use one of the various of English as their mother tongue language, use one of them as their second or foreign language as well. But, why do 1,5 billion people around the world speak English? Here some historical facts that will help us figure it out. First of all the Allies, including Britain and the US, won World War 1, which brought in more English influence around the world. The Treaty of Versailles was signed in English and French, marking the importance of both languages. Second reason why English become a global language was after World War 2, when the US become the richest nation on Earth. The Allies, including Britain and the US, won the World War 2, which also brought in more English influence around the world. And the third equally important reason is colonization. England colonised North America, the Indian Subcontinent, much of the Caribbean and Africa, Australia and New Zealand. So, the colonised had to learn English and lot of new English vocabulary came from these new places. Of corse there are a lot of other reasons, but in my opinion English worthy to be called as a «global language». There are numerous arguments for and against English as a global language. On one hand, that having a global language it is a aids in communication and pooling information. For example, English is the language of diplomacy and international communications, business, tourism, education, science, computer technology, media and Internet. Don't need to forgot that English is the official language for aircraft/airport communication. Because English was used to develop communication, technology, programming, software, etc., it dominates the web. On the other hand, it leaves out those who, for one reason or another, are not fluent in the global language. It can also lead to a cultural hegemony of the populations speaking the global language as a first language. Just as English itself has borrowed words from many different languages over its history, English words now appear in a great many languages around the world. And, what is the most widely used English word? The form OK or Okey is probably the most intensively used, borrowed word in the history of the language. English truly has become a global language, used to connect people across borders. Basically, English just seems to always be in the right place at the right time. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_language http://speakenglishcenter.com/en/english-5-reasons-why-is-english-the-global-language-of-today/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Kahn
