While traveling, knowing English can be invaluable and give you confidence in meeting new people. Learning a second language, however, can be difficult and challenging for some. While some individuals seem to rapidly pick up various languages, others find learning a new language extremely frustrating and insurmountable with all the memorization demands and uneven language constructions. What’s an effective way to learn a new language? Without motivation and effective learning techniques some people simply give up on. Mobile apps for language learning can assist in motivating and challenging you to practice a fresh language consistently. These apps efficiently game common learning techniques such as daily repetition exercises, use of flashcards, practice tests and drills based on rewards, making learning a language fun and addictive. Most mobile users are addicted to their smartphones. What better way to spend fifteen minutes on your phone than learning a language and having fun at it. Smart app developers like Duolingo make learning new languages fun and extremely addictive by gamifying the learning experience with an on-screen app that will drill you on new phrases, carefully introduce new sentence structures and test you on fundamental pronunciation, reading, listening and writing. The app uses the learning technique of flash cards effectively with fun picture icons to drill new vocabulary. Pronunciation and spelling is drilled and tested frequently. The app uses a lot of practice tests that was discovered to enhance learning. According to an academic study practice tests mix up components of the brain that differ when we merely absorb the language. I credit this addictive mobile app for the achievement of my 266-day learning streak of studying French. It has a clean interface, feels intuitive and best of all it’s entirely free.
