During the course of the past couple of centuries due to its relative simplicity and the English speaking countries activity, English has become one of the main world languages. However there are some people who doubt whether speaking the language is actually important. Many students face this problem when deciding if they want to learn English and if it will be useful for their future job. In my opinion, speaking English can only have a positive effect on one’s career. First of all, English grants access to a lot of educational resources. Students who know English can take various online courses or go study abroad. According to Times Higher Education ranking, top-10 best universities (Oxford, Cambridge, Stanford, MIT, Caltech, Harvard etc.) are located in the UK and the USA. Besides all the leading universities across the world have programs in English. Thus, knowing this language creates a vast number of opportunities to get more high-quality education, which definitely increases one’s value at the labour market. Secondly, English is the most popular language in the world. World Population Review 2019 states that there are over 70 countries that use English as a primary language of communication. SIL International’s research shows that there are 379 million native English speakers and 753.3 million non-native speakers. This means that totally there are 1.132 billion people all around the globe who can communicate using one language, which easily makes English a lingua franca of our time. Once a person has learnt it, he or she can exchange experience with people worldwide or find a job in a foreign country. Being able to communicate with people abroad also increases one’s chances to be appointed for a work trip to a different country or to meet foreign partners and clients, this usually helps career growth. Thirdly, an overwhelming number of employment areas require the knowledge of English. Global business and marketing, banking and finance, medicine and science, tourism and trade, media and IT – these are just a few examples where technologies and the necessity to communicate with people all over the globe on a regular basis make it nearly impossible to succeed without speaking at least some English. Moreover, all of these areas appear to be extremely popular and well-paid. More importantly, many of them shape our society and the way it works and are essential to the future of the planet. It seems to be obvious that the number of people who desire to work in these fields will increase, thus making English one of the basic requirements to be successful. Last but not least is that English is also the language of knowledge and information. For example, the English Wikipedia is estimated to be the largest of all Wikipedias and to contain over 5 884 940 pages. It is approximately 26 times greater than the next biggest one. Another fact is that English is definitely the language of the Internet. According to World Wide Web Technology Surveys (W3Techs) 54% of all web is in English. For reference, the next most used language occupies only 6% of all websites. Not to mention that English is the basic language of computing itself. Furthermore, English plays a significant role in terms of science. The absolute majority of the most advanced and influential scientific journals in every field are published in English (Nature, Cell, PLOS One, The Lancet etc.). The language is also used for international conferences and meetings devoted to various scientific problems. It is well known that if a person wants to be a sought-after specialist in his/her area of expertise, he/she should always be improving in their respective fields, regularly getting acquainted with the latest research, discoveries, theories, methods. The above mentioned facts show that with the help of English it can be done in a most effective way. All in all, speaking English helps people get a higher quality education, communicate with foreign companies and clients across the world and travel for work. It is viewed as one of the key skills required in many employment areas and it provides an opportunity to constantly better personal knowledge by accessing the newest up to date information. Due to these reasons I believe that speaking English only contributes to people’s success at work.
