The EAS approach help students learn effectively the language and it consist of three main stages: 1) Engage: In this stage teachers arouse students’ interest and help them “entering” into the English speaking class. Fun and motivation has a positive effect on the learning experience, determining how much information students retain. If students are amused, stimulated and challenged since minute one, the overall lesson is likely to be successful. Error correction should not be performed by the teacher in this stage. 2) Study: In this second stage teachers draw students attention on specific linguistic structures, functions or information to help learners discover how the language works. Drills and concept check questions/activities are helpful to check students’ understanding of the new structures. Error correction is of course important and it should be focused on helping students consolidate what they have just discovered. 3) Activate: This stage of the lesson is particularly student-centred, as learners have the possibility to practice the language they have just leraned, along with the language they have previously studied. Exercises and activities are designed to get students using language as freely and communicatively as they can. As much as the Engage stage, students should have fun and be challenged, so as to go out from class fully satisfied with their learning experience. Error correction is important, although it shouldn’t be too strict, in order to avoid putting students off; error correction is extended to other structures than those acquired in the lesson. A good lesson plan needs to include almost all this elements, although the teacher might decide to concentrate more on a stage rather than the other, according to the objective of the lesson. Moreover, these three main elements don’t always need to appear in the basic order, defined as “Straight Arrow” - often used in class with low level students. Other sequencing are the Boomerang order and the Patchwork EAS lesson, more suitable for medium to high level students.
