This course gave me a thorough introduction to being a
teacher. It gave me a new perspective on how to consider the roles and relationships of
teacher and students inside the classroom, and the responsibilities of a
teacher beyond presenting new information and evaluating students' absorption of the information. A
teacher must be sensible to and sensitive of each student's: past history and current external situation, possible insecurities and weaknesses, attention span and personal interests, need for variety, expectations (cultural and personal) and motivations, progress throughout the course and need for feedback and evaluation, need for encouragement and praise, need for challenges, language proficiency level and gaps in knowledge, relationships with other students in the class, potential need for extra work or support from
teacher or fellow students, etc.
Beyond the new multi-faceted perspective on the
teacher's roles, responsibilities, and relationships with students, the course has taught me how to properly organize and plan lessons, which I will definitely use when teaching. The multiple practical advantages of lesson plans were new to me and I will undoubtedly design, modify, and keep lesson plans for class management and personal reference (both in classroom and out) purposes. The practical considerations and uses of different teaching materials and teaching methodologies will be very useful when I begin teaching, especially as they highlight the objectives of lessons, which I hadn't considered before. Yes, the primary ostensible objective of the lesson is to convey new material and practice old, but the teaching methodology emphasizes a secondary objective, eg. teaching new material through writing skills or productive fluency, which introduces multilayered focus to each lesson.
Overall, this course has opened my eyes to what a juggling game teaching is. One has to balance students' interests with required lesson material with practical usage with class size and arrangement with variety and sensitivity, all while being a positive and approachable source of help and information for students and building a rapport with each individual. While this seems difficult, if not theoretically impossible, the course has also made me very excited to teach. Now that I feel more prepared, I am eager to begin teaching as soon as possible and gain in-classroom experience. I will definitely follow the guidelines and suggestions of this course, as well as ask fellow
teachers for help and advice when I need it. The single most useful advice that I will implement is the ESA teaching methodology and lesson structure.
