This unit showed the motives and reasons for the receptive skills of reading and listening. We started with the general reasons and then moved into more detail describing the different types of skills involved with reading and listening like scanning and skimming and reading or listening for detailed information. The problems that come up with a receptive skills lesson were also covered. We learned how to deal with material that might have some words that are difficult for the students level of learning by pre-teaching them the words necessary for them to understand the material while leaving some of the other vocabulary for them to discover on there own or at a later time. We learned how to use the ESA method of teaching to teach these skills by introducing an activate phase that flows naturally from the text or audio used in the earlier part of the lesson.
