Music is everywhere in our lives. We listen to music when we are happy, sad, angry or when we need inspiration or when we want to relax (whilst travelling, waiting, shopping, relaxing) We can also teach with them. Songs in the classroom are a highly effective way of teaching english as a second language. Music can be used to teach: 1. reading – as an authentic material – song lyrics (discussions, culture teaching, comprehension) 2. vocabulary – to teach vocabulary (replace with an antonym, synonym…) 3. grammar – while reviewing 4. writing – adjusting original song texts 5. listening – various exercises 6. phonetics 7. pronunciation (stress and intonation) 8. dictation 9. integrative skills Music also: • improves concentration • improves memory • brings a sense of community to a group • motivates learning • relaxes people who are overwhelmed or stressed • makes learning fun • helps people absorb material The main reason why songs can work exceedingly well in the foreign language classroom is that they contain authentic, natural language, many songs are available with wide selection of suitable themes, levels and vocabulary, students can get exposed to many different kinds of accents (British english, American english, Caribbean english) which are all widely available through songs. They contain authentic language, are easily obtainable, provide vocabulary, grammar and cultural aspects and are fun for the students. They provide enjoyable speaking, listening, vocabulary and language practice both in and out of the classroom. I think teaching english as a second language using music and songs is a very practical way to make both teaching and learning successful. It creates a relaxed atmosphere. It is better to break the classroom routine with some music and at the same time help students learn in a different and fun way. It's is exciting for students because not only do they get to hear the song, but they are also able to see their grammar lesson in action. The use of music in the classroom can make the entire learning process more enjoyable (music has an ability to activate vocabulary and grammar). Using music in the classroom allows students to make associations with something other than the lesson itself. It also promotes memorization, listening and speaking skills. Students, who are taught in a fun and creative way, love coming to class. Using music in the classroom is a great way for teachers to achieve success with students. It's a decoy to attract the attention of the most flippant and unruly of students. It can stimulate them to learn real language and also to develop their aesthetic sense. There are many types of songs which can be used in the classroom, ranging from nursery rhymes to contemporary pop music. There is also a lot of music written specifically for english language teaching kids (children are natural music lovers. You don't have to convince them that it will help them learn): a) alphabet songs, b) animal songs, c) colours songs, d) remembering names, e) energy boosters, etc.. Most children enjoy participating in musical activities. The appealing rhythms of music help children remember what they sing and the messages of the words. Music can increase children's understanding of principles and strengthen their understanding. You can also use music to greet children, focus their attention on a lesson, or calm them after an activity. Music can change the pace of a lesson and allow children to use their extra energy.
