When I look around my surroundings and analyze the different persons who are considered to be the most valuable and beneficial, I find nothing but only a teacher. teacher, by definition, is a person who teaches something to some other person. These other persons can be called his/her students. The relationship between a teacher and student revolves around a string called ‘Teaching'. Now, I can limit myself and try to be focused on certain main aspects of the topic, otherwise, the topic is very broad and it is really difficult for me to ‘limit' the role of a teacher in any society. To me, any person who teaches the other, makes him/her understand some issue, helps him/her solving a problem, and clears a concept of something in the mind of another person, assists him/her passing through a tough situation, gives her/him a unique idea, a new philosophy, an innovative thought, inspires him/her to take an initiative……is called a ‘teacher'. A true teacher can inspire not only a one person but the whole nation. He/she has capabilities to collect the information, process this information, makes some result/s, analyze the results, and draw some inference, an inference that has some very obvious or potential benefit ranging from a person to a whole nation. Especially, when I see the growth and developmental processes of our babies and children, I wonder to see the role of a competent teacher. He/she is the one who teaches our children and adults, taking them out from the darkness of ignorance to the bright light of knowledge. Darkness is a condition in which or through which one cannot see, it makes your vision ‘tunneled', it makes your thoughts constipated, it makes you selfish as you only think of yourself of how to get out of this qualm, it hinders you to go forward as you cannot see anything and the chances of staggering and collision become raised by many fold. Darkness literally makes you blind whereas, brightness is not only bright in itself but also makes the other things bright, it clears the scene and one can now decide what to do, where to go, whom to see, when to start, how to help, why we are here and what is the object of our life. This, I think, is the most important duty of a true teacher that he/she tells you the aim of your life. Without aim in this life is just like a boat without a sailor, tumbling upon the waves, gets into a whirlpool and then vanishes! But, here are certain considerations about ‘who' is teacher. Teaching itself is a profession, it is a service, it is a business, and it is a corporate domain. There are teachers who just kill the time. They perform their assissgned duties and after that they don't bother to take out even a minute to think about their students and their issues if any. They just come, deliver the lecture, ask some ‘pet' questions and leave the classroom exactly at time. They don't show any spirit, enthusiasm, excitement, eagerness, and interest to put extra efforts for the students; rather they try to keep themselves away from the students. This is a stratum of this profession which is not the true representative of teaching profession. They have little knowledge and what is more, they don't try to update their selves. They don't try to get the latest techniques of teaching, don't try to understand the problems of education sector as a whole, they don't try to understand the image of teachers in a society. They are always in search of a tuition (make extra money). They are working just like anyone else in a factory, come, work, and go. Actually, this is the segment that blurs the true picture of true teachers. In the developing countries like us, there are many more additional problems regarding teaching and teachers; the low socio-economic level is at the top, then governmental policies, budgets fixed for education sector, low paid jobs, low education level of teachers, lack of facilities for teachers for higher studies at their own cost (lack of scholarships available, and those available, prone to be nepotism), all contributing to the overall bad image of teaching. That is why a very small percentage of the educated people come to this profession, and those who come are bound to join otherwise they would have some other jobs. This is a main cause of frustration in this highly honorable and educated section of the society. In spite of all the limitations which I have mentioned above, I think that still, it is the best profession anywhere in the world. I can safely say that teachers are the builders of the future of a country.
