I learned that you need a balance of authentic and created materials. It will help to keep students interested. You cannot rely on the course book totally. But by using the course book you then have a guide for the teacher and for the student that is graded. If you are going to be creative you will need to supplement or you may need to reinforce on a certain subject that the students need more practice with. For the very beginner you will have to use more created and less authentic materials until the students are able to read and understand.
