This unit shows us the importance of the receptive skills of reading and listening. With these skills we often use them for two primary reasons. The first reason is for a purpose. An example of this is finding the starting time of a movie in a newspaper. Second is listening or reading for entertainment or pleasure. This type is more passive and an example could be listening to an audiobook or reading a novel. It's important for the teacher to select the readings and listening activities so that they are appropriate for the class. Non-authentic reading/listening can be used for lower level students as it's language is simpler and more graded to the learner's level. Authentic reading/listening can be used with more advanced students to provide real world examples and can help learners in real situations.
