I have a game plan now. Had my attention not been brought to ESA methodology and variations, I likely would have gone on to teach more or less completely from course books in what would have equated to all study phase activities. I see value in less hustling through material and more taking time to engage students' interests, let them rehearse their words, and let them enjoy learning. The classroom experience can be about comfort and not just academic rigor. I see in my future the challenge to conduct an atmosphere that is just as fun as it is insightful. In order to make the bridge between the lesson material and the students, I will need to be a constant builder of teacher-student and student-student rapport. I plan to start with the approach of learning and using students' names throughout lessons. My other main “weapon” around which all other techniques will orbit is patience. If I could only pick two qualities of rapport to be associated with in students' minds, those qualities would be knowing people's names and being patient. I will work to be a teacher who is there to provide a welcoming environment and who takes the time to make sure students understand the material. Part of that understanding and personalized learning are calling students by name for 3 x 3 response and getting them to paraphrase instructions and material rather than asking if anyone has any questions. Those techniques alone are big game-changers that I did not previously have in my toolbox. The concept of choosing when, how, and if students' mistakes receive correction was new to me as well. I'm glad I was informed of the trade-offs between guiding students toward correct language use and giving them comfort to freely produce english. Framing all this was the lesson plan template, which I found helpful in its inclusion of aims for each lesson and potential issues for the students and teacher. It encouraged me to think about such factors beyond the transmission of material to students. I appreciated the fact that, though somewhat comprehensive, it was simple to fill out electronically. It was a practical tool which I'll be sure to use unless certain schools have their own planning format or until I create my own. Seeing the inner workings of these teaching strategies helped me analyze my own education and recognize the ways teachers presented material in classes I took. I can now recall my favorite instructors and begin to break down what it was about them that really got my classmates and me plugged into the learning experience. I'm not going to pretend that I'll be able to incorporate every tactic from this course at the outset, or even soon after I begin teaching. Yet what I will do is focus on two or three crucial skills at a time as I continually refine my teaching craft.
