Throughout this course, I gained a lot of knowledge on basic english grammar. If you were to ask me before I started this course how the past, present, and future can be broken down into individual explicable tenses, I would not have been able to tell you. Knowing basic grammar has made me much more comfortable as a teacher. I am now able to break down and provide explanations to my students when they seek help understanding english grammar points. Additionally, I did not realize how complex and important phonetics can be. I have recently introduced tongue twisters to my second graders and they have not only had a lot of fun practicing them, but they have noticeably improved their pronunciation. By introducing the idea of intonation to my students and trying to help them learn to speak less like robots, some who used to just regurgitate what I say, have realized that reading english is about comprehending what they are saying out loud. It has been a lot of fun writing sentences on the board and then calling on students to read them as they think they should sound. For example, one of my students volunteered to stand up and read the sentence "Look, there is a shark next to you." This student, not really listening to what he was saying, read the sentence with very little urgency. He caused him, the class, and me a good laugh and since then the students have tried to better understand what they are reading. Lastly, I feel as though I learned a lot about teaching adults. In my experience, I have only taught elementary school students and have therefore not learned anything about how adult students, especially business classes would function. I feel more prepared now to take on a business class should the opportunity ever present itself. I look forward to working with adults and having the chance to explain to them the basic english grammar rules and other vital english knowledge that I now understand.
