British english is the form of english used in the United Kingdom. It includes all english dialects used within the United Kingdoms. American english is the form of english used in the united states. It includes all english Dialects used within the united states. British english considerably varies. The dialects and accents not only differ with the countries of england, Northern ireland, Scotland, and Wales, but also the regions within the countries. American english generally has four major regions that alter in dialects and accents. They are Northern, Southern, Midland, and Western english. They also change slightly within the regions. There are some differences between the two. Pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, spelling, and idioms are the main differences. The grammar contains many small differences between British english and American english. Collective nouns of multitude in British english can either take singular or plural forms. In American english, they're usually singular. For example, in British english, “Germany are the champions” can be used. In American english, “Germany is the champion” usually is used in construction. The past and past participle forms of certain verbs are different as well. Learn, spoil, burn, and dream have regular and irregular forms that are both used in British english whereas the irregular forms are rarely used in American english. (For example, learned/learnt, spoil/spoilt, dreamed/dreamt, etc.) The auxiliary verb, ‘shall', is more commonly used in British english than American english. ‘Shan't' is not used or rarely used in American english. There are also some verbs that show differences in transitivity. ‘Agree' is used as transitive or intransitive in British english whereas it is used as an intransitive verb in American english. ‘Appeal' is used as an intransitive verb in British english and transitive in American english. There are some differences in spelling. In British english, words ending in –re, -our, and –ise have different spellings than in American english. Colour, humour, patronise, recognise, theatre, and centre are a few examples. They are spelled as color, humor, patronize, recognize, theater, and center in American english. In American english, ‘Do you have…?' is used while in British english, ‘Have you got…?' is used. The few differences that are between British english and American english seem to be diminishing for two major reasons with American english becoming more dominant from my perspective. American television shows and films are usually shown in their original versions in non-english speaking countries with subtitles. They are also more widely viewed in contrast to British television shows and movies. There are also more American television shows and movies viewed in the United Kingdom rather than British television and movies viewed in the united states. Another major reason is that the united states dominates international business. Most of the major global operating companies are based in the united states. This demands a need for spoken American english in business affairs. Even though American english might be more widely used, I expect the few differences to fade away with more exposure to both American english and British english in the upcoming years.
