When I first signed up for the online tefl course, I was only teaching for a few months already. It was my first teaching job and I did not know what to expect. Like most people, I thought that as long as I knew how to do the material teaching would be easy. However, I was completely wrong. Soon after my first semester I realized that teaching was less about the material and more about a combination of style and substance. This tefl course taught me how to teach english while keeping it interesting for the students as well as myself by emphasizing the importance of good student rapport, using a variety of teaching methods, and how to deal with student management issues. The first thing that this course has taught me is the importance of establishing good student rapport. This is something that I not only learned from this tefl course but I also noticed this in my classroom. When I first started teaching, I was more focused on the curriculum, making sure that the students receive and comprehend the material. I prepared my material thoroughly so at least my students wouldn’t doubt me as an educator. However, about half way through the term, I realized that the class was very dry, boring, and the students were not motivated. Although I realized this, it was difficult for me to come up with a solution. This course gave me lots of ideas on how to be an educator as well as keep the class interesting. For example, I started making more connections with the lesson to their own interests. That way, the students are more interested in the material because it is about something they like. Once good rapport is established and students respect you as a teacher, I learned the importance of maintaining this enthusiasm throughout the course by executing different teaching styles. The second thing that this course has taught me is the importance of making a diverse dynamic in the classroom. Students, just as any humans, get bored if things are always repetitive. In order to keep the students engaged, it is crucial that the teacher tries to make the material interesting. This will not only make the classroom more enjoyable for the students but for the teacher as well. This course gave me many ideas on how to create an exciting environment for the students. For example, I started implementing engaging activities before a lesson to get the students excited about the topic. I would do this by using media, discussions, or short games. I found this to be very effective as the energy level is much higher in the classroom and therefore makes them more excited when it comes to learning that day’s lesson. However, the teacher must also be sensitive to the group of students in each classroom and choose activities based on that particular classroom dynamic. Disregarding this matter can lead to disruptive or unresponsive behavior. The third thing that his course has taught me is the importance and methods of dealing with student management issues. There is never one class that is perfect; in most classes there are usually one or two students who are a bit more energetic, disruptive, or unresponsive. From my experience, I learned that although they may be just one or two in a class of ten or fifteen this can really create a disruptive learning environment for the rest of the students. All students are different and a teacher must use a variety of methods in reprimanding bad behavior in the class but as a whole, this tefl course has taught me to deal with such matters with positive criticism and logical consequences. Within my first few months of teaching, I found student management issues to be the hardest part of teaching. I did not know what to do with some students who just do not want to learn. From this course, I realized that these students are not trying to cause trouble nor do they have malicious intentions. Most of the times, they are bored, uninterested, or just don’t understand the material and therefore their bad behavior is their outlet. As a teacher, it is important to realize what the source of the issue is and deal with that, rather than dealing with reprimanding the student based on his or her bad behavior. Doing so will not only help the student, but will also create less stress upon yourself as a teacher. In conclusion, I found this course to be very helpful in my current teaching career. I found myself identifying with many of the issues and benefits of teaching as mentioned in the course. I could easily relate to the situations and therefore experimented with my students some of the suggestions as mentioned in the course to improve my classroom dynamic. I found myself enjoying teaching much more and it seemed as though the students enjoyed my class more as well.
