One of the most popular and effective games for a classroom is ‘Hangman'. This game has been used for many years by teachers and students all around the world. Many variations have been made of ‘hangman', but I feel that I have invented one that is perfect for many different levels of esl students. My game is called ‘Team Hangman'. ‘Team Hangman' is similar to ‘Hangman' in many ways, but the differences between them make ‘Team Hangman' a better game. This game has been effectively used by me with all levels of english language learners. First I will explain the rules of ‘Team Hangman'. The class has to be divided into teams. There can be between two and six teams, any more than that and things start to get a little hectic. Next the order for the first round should be decided. Usually the team with the smallest amount of players or ‘weakest' team goes first. The teacher then decides a sentence or group of sentences and writes the corresponding number of blank spaces on the board. Example: The big dog is on the log. = _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _. The teacher then draws a noose for the hangman character. A player from the first team then chooses a letter. If the letter is in the sentence, then that team gets one point for every time the letter appears. In the example sentence, ‘O' would be a great choice and would give that team three points. If the letter is not in the sentence, then the teacher draws a part of the hangman character. The game ends when one of two things happens; if a student solves the sentence or if the hangman character is complete. A student can end the game at any time if they can solve the sentence. Solving the sentence gives that student's team an additional three points. The scores carry over to the next round and the team with the lowest cumulative score goes first in the next round One key difference between ‘Hangman' and ‘Team Hangman' is that ‘Team Hangman' is played with teams. The size of the teams does not really matter. You can have an uneven amount of players and still have competitive games. ‘Stronger' players should be divided onto separate teams. However, teams without ‘stronger' players can still win. Because the team with the lowest score always goes first, they have more chances to get good letters. In some sentences a letter like ‘E' can get over five points easily allowing ‘weaker' teams to catch up while solving the sentence only gives a three point bonus. Students like the fact that the game is even and that any team can win. ‘Team Hangman' also lets students feel that they are a part of a team. Students can cheer, or boo, each other. Every turn a different student from the team gives a letter. This lets all of the students participate and work with other students. Even though ‘Team Hangman' is a very fun game, it has a high educational value for esl students. The game is completely in english and spelling, writing, listening, and reading skills are developed. Students also can practice their team work skills. This game is great to use either before or after a lesson. If used in the beginning of the lesson, it lets students become really engaged and excited to start their lesson. The sentence(s) in the answer can be used to either introduce the topic or review a previous one. If used at the end of the lesson, the students can have fun. However you decide to use ‘Team Hangman', your students will be sure to love it, and they will be able to use their english, be part of a team, and have a lot of fun.
