I think students want to explore and discover through experience. I find interactive activities very important when preparing lesson plans and activities. I try to keep following things in mind: establishing background knowledge (discussions, games), over-plan (being flexible), praise good behavior, and student-centered lesson plans. I am teaching high school students in a small island in Korea. From my personal experience, I found that the students in such homogenous country tend to feel shy in front of their academic peers. That being the case, I believe building learners' self-esteem is one of the most important aspects of Teaching english. So I try to give the students more chances to speak, and to ask questions. Awarding, praising, and calling names seem to motivate the students gradually. I also try to share my personal stories to give some cultural knowledge, which they would not have learned otherwise. I think tefl provided an insight into excellent esl approaches and methods.
