The different forms of the past tense help us to identify what happened in when in relation to past actions. An understanding of these uses of the grammer will be essential for confidence in teaching them. Once the basic building blocks are understood I think it will be easy for students to identify which forms they are and why they are used. Like if it ends in ing it's going to be ....continuous.... and if it uses the verb (have) you can expect past perfect continuous. Get students to make the grammer work for them and not the other way around.
