Grammar in its simplest form is a basic sentence with at least a subject and a verb.However, the parts of speech can be further classified and much more complicated in its rules and word order. Some classifications are: *Nouns- names of animals, people, places qualities or states they can be compound, proper, common, abstract, collective, plural, countable and uncountable *Adjectives- describe nouns such as people & things they can be comparatives (adj. + ...er than) or superlatives (adj. ...est) *Articles- definite or indefinite *Verbs- describe an action or state they can be transitive or intransitive the infinitive form uses the base verb, plus the word 'to' main forms are base, past simple, past participle, present participle they can be regular in conjugation, or irregular *Adverbs- add information to a verb, or modify an adjective or another adverb there are five main types: of manner, place, time, degree or frequency placement of an adverb is extremely important, and can be difficult *Gerunds- the +...ing form of a verb used as a noun *Pronouns- used instead of, or in place of a more precise noun or noun phrase some types are personal, possessive, reflexive relative *Prepositions- show a relationship between a noun or pronoun with some other word in a sentence *Conjunctions- join words or groups of words in a sentence Grammar for a native speaker of English generally comes easily and without thought of rules, word order or classifications of speech parts. However, to be an effective teacher of English as a second language, one must have a working knowledge of these rules and parts of speech, be able to explain them clearly & simply, and to be able to reference answers concisely and accurately.
