they can be compound, proper, common, abstract, collective, plural, countable and uncountable
*Adjectives- describe nouns such as people & things
they can be comparatives (adj. + ...er than) or superlatives (adj. ...est)
*Articles- definite or indefinite
*Verbs- describe an action or state
they can be transitive or intransitive
the infinitive form uses the base verb, plus the word 'to'
main forms are base, past simple, past participle, present participle
they can be regular in conjugation, or irregular
*Adverbs- add information to a verb, or modify an adjective or another adverb
there are five main types: of manner, place, time, degree or frequency
placement of an adverb is extremely important, and can be difficult

Grammar for a native speaker of English generally comes easily and without thought of rules, word order or classifications of speech parts. However, to be an effective teacher of English as a second language, one must have a working knowledge of these rules and parts of speech, be able to explain them clearly & simply, and to be able to reference answers concisely and accurately.
