It can be a degree in anything at all, thus not having prepared the future teacher for their new job and life. Some other countries don't require a bachelor's degree at all. Luckily, I happened to have the chance to work as a one-to-one English tutor before. I had never taught out of the United States and never considered the possibility that my students wouldn’t understand, what I thought, was simple English.
