I have traveled throughout Asia for some forty-five years, Vietnam is now my home. I always found the younger generations had a thirst for knowledge, particularly English as a second language. The difficulties of acquiring the knowledge under what was a repressive regime have diminished somewhat, but the major stumbling blocks to acquiring good English are the lack of experienced Vietnamese teachers, interaction with English natural speakers, and knowledge of the outside world in general.

Koreans take education very, very seriously, yet there are many problems for learners in South Korea. Society deems those who are not good at studying as lazy, and good for nothing, therefore most students study to death. Literally. They go to school extremely early, finish around noon, and then stay at a cram school until late at night. They repeat the same routine over and over again every single day. They even have to study during vacation. This results in students that do not study because they are motivated or because they want to, but simply because they are forced to, and if they do not, they can’t enter the college they want or land the job they’ve always dreamed of.
Studying until 2 or 3 am has... [Read more]

Education comes in many forms, whether through months of hands-on training or years of schooling.
Education comes in many forms. Yet, nowadays, it seems like a college degree is the best and the most meritorious achievement in education –something that employers not only support but also demand.
To produce this article, I questioned some of my fellow colleagues and professionals from the teaching field in my close circle.
"The concept has evolved somewhere in the last 20 years that you need a college degree to ensure your professional success," said AIP managing director Adam Ling. "This has led to many people seeking a four-year degree program and even a master's degree... [Read more]

Being in the teaching field for more than a decade and having taught in Saudi Arabia for the last 7+ years, I will give some pointers about my experience here as an English Language teacher.
The education industry in Saudi Arabia is very blooming. There are many international schools, colleges, and universities - and the English education field in Saudi Arabia continues to grow and expand.
Due to the rapid shift in the education system during the past few years, the country has established an insatiable appetite for ESL English Language teachers. English language learning has become mandatory in pretty much the entire school system. Since English is considered as a key skill for... [Read more]

As a young child, I was, for some reason, obsessed with the idea of learning French. I tried a couple of languages, including Finnish at some point, but kept going back to French. I have no idea why because I was never exposed to the culture or the language itself at that age. I doubt I even knew anything about the country itself. I think I assumed learning French would make me sound smarter but, the joke's on younger me, I have no skill in French and never have. I tend to struggle with romance languages in general.

Teaching English to an individual student is a common form of EFL classroom setting nowadays. Luckily, I happened to have the chance to work as a one-to-one English tutor before. Although I was a novice English teacher at that time, the experience of teaching one to one certainly helped me develop as a teacher and gave me a new perception of English teaching. There were some challenges I faced as a novice English tutor which I did not know how to solve, but now after self-evaluation and taking TESOL course, I gained a deeper understanding on teaching one to one and how to solve the problems in class.

The first and most important quality for a teacher, regardless of what you teach, is the love for teaching. When we do things with passion, the energy that we put on it changes completely the result we obtain, as well as the entire experience for us and our students. Of course, it is imperative that we love the discipline we are teaching, but teaching is not about us enjoying it, it is about us guiding a student into the journey. From the first steps through all the complexity of it. In my career, one of the things that fills me the most, and does it every day, is the satisfaction of seeing the happiness of my students when they manage to achieve a new goal.

After struggling a lot with learning as I was supposed to and believing that I was not smart enough, I finally took a subject at college that changed my thinking. One crucial aspect of learning a language is making sure that everyone in the class is comfortable. While this is true with young learners, this is especially true for adults. Adults don’t want to make mistakes. Business professionals have devoted their lives to one of the hardest areas in which one can make money, and if they are doing it as a career, they are most likely succeeding at it. This means that the business professionals may very well be unaccustomed to... [Read more]

People may think that taking a TEFL course is not necessary to be a good teacher. Along with that, TEFL courses cost both time and money, so, understandably, people question whether it is even worth it to take the course. Although many people have become successful teachers without taking a TEFL course, these courses can provide teachers and aspiring teachers tips for managing a class and creating a more efficient lesson plan. Also, when teaching English in a foreign country, knowledge of the English language is not the only thing someone needs to know; teachers need to be aware of a variety of issues that can arise when teaching in a foreign country. Being a teacher has been a dream of mine since childhood, and as time goes by, I started to understand that life is, in fact, a continuous teaching and learning experience. The fact that I could impact someone's life is the greatest reward to be a teacher. My primary reason why I have decided to pursue education is that I naturally feel the strong desire and happiness to positively influencing and educating people. One of the major satisfactions of being a teacher is to enrich a student's life. The essential qualities of this profession would be patience, understanding, compassion, and flexibility.

What is phonology? Most students have not even heard about it. Whenever I ask my students whether they know or have ever learned about phonetics, the same answers come out, “No, we don’t know about it at all”. It is no wonder they reply like this because there is no phonetic teaching lesson in English classes from KG to high school here in my country. As for me, I got to study about this only when I attended college. Even then, it wasn’t taught comprehensively and I only learned very little. So I couldn’t read nor write phonetic symbols very well.
