Elizaveta Pachina Teaching Ideas At a very early age, I was amazed by the sounds of English. I used to listen to songs in English while one of my parent’s friends was cleaning his car. He used to play them out loud and I wanted to know what the lyrics said. Several years later I had the chance to go to China to be part of a cultural exchange program to learn Chinese. My accepting interview was completely in English rather than Chinese or even my native language Spanish. All paperwork was done in either Spanish or Chinese depending on where I was. Either here in Latin-American or on the other side of the world, the medium of communication was English. This post was written by our TEFL certification graduate Andres G. Elizaveta Pachina Alumni Experiences I have chosen this topic as I have been living in France for the past seven years and I would like to write about how I learned French and how learning this language has helped me in teaching English as a foreign language. This post was written by our TEFL certification graduate Daniel L. Please note that this blog post might not necessarily represent the beliefs or opinions of ITTT. I remember when I wanted to come to France, I bought a book called 'French in three months'. I followed the instructions, I learned the words and I had the impression that I could speak French albeit very slowly with a terrible accent. On arrival in France, I quickly learned that my French was nowhere near as good as I thought it was. I didn't understand anything more...  [Read more]

Elizaveta Pachina Alumni Experiences My skin, infused with a generous amount of sunlight, illuminated the atmosphere all about me. My body gleamed in its home-made oil, as my heart throbbed through the entire flight. I clung to the acid-washed denim jacket that I wore as I departed Boeing 737; being born and raised on an island it was my first time experiencing weather that was below 62 degrees Fahrenheit – I was freezing. This post was written by our TEFL certification graduate Rochelle R. Please note that this blog post might not necessarily represent the beliefs or opinions of ITTT. It is safe to say that I was nowhere near prepared for the weather or the journey I was about to embark on. We had immigrated to the United States in search of better health care services for my dad,...  [Read more]

Elizaveta Pachina Alumni Experiences Throughout high school and college, I mainly focused on learning how to speak Japanese as my second language. Unlike English, Japanese is a fairly phonetic language. Two of its three writing systems, hiragana and katakana, are phonetic. This makes it easy for foreigners to learn because each syllable, also known as sound clusters in some circles, is almost always said exactly how it is spelled. The third writing system, kanji, is not and, as such, is much more difficult for foreigners to learn because kanji are essentially pictures that describe their meaning. They are much more difficult to learn and use in everyday speech. This post was written by our TEFL certification graduate Nicole H. Elizaveta Pachina Alumni Experiences Have you ever wondered why people all over the world are somehow curious about the English language? Or why does a country like Japan wherein the English language is not a requirement to get a job, is on-demand for more competent and effective English teachers? These kinds of questions make me remember my favorite quote, “Everything has a reason”; And yes somehow, English exists for a reason of course. You might be thinking why I entitled this essay “Connecting Dots Through English”, well you will find out why, as you read more on this essay. Elizaveta Pachina Teaching Ideas For the past few years, I have worked with students one on one as a tutor for a variety of subjects such as history, math, and English. I have a great deal of experience with this mode of educating where I am working with one student at a time and through this course, I have learned a few new techniques that I want to extrapolate on and discuss in this essay. This post was written by our TEFL certification graduate Canaan K. Please note that this blog post might not necessarily represent the beliefs or opinions of ITTT. The first concept that I liked and now want to incorporate into my tutoring sessions is the implementation of the “needs analysis” which is a test or form that allows for students to show me what they need during our lessons. I think...  [Read more]

Linda Dunsmore Alumni Experiences Where do I begin? I have learned so much from my 60-hour TEFL course with ITTT. I have learned about everything from what it takes to become a great teacher and of course what not to do in the classroom. I also learned a lot about what makes a student a great learner. I believe this is very important as well since good learners progress more rapidly in the class. That rapid learning makes good learners and most of all more successful students. In turn that builds confidence in the teacher on behalf of the students. Of course, the teacher ends up with more confidence in their teaching abilities too. This post was written by our ITTT graduate Michael A. The goal is for the student is to learn English and I believe a good teacher is the most important part...  [Read more]

Elizaveta Pachina Alumni Experiences Near the end of my senior year at Oberlin College in America, I was selected to participate in the Oberlin Shansi Fellowship at Beijing Normal University. The main goals of the fellowship were to increase my Chinese language proficiency and to teach English to master’s students in the department of Chinese Language and Culture. Reflecting upon the experiences that I had this past year has illuminated many things that I would like to improve upon as a teacher next year and has reminded me of some of the key moments that inspired me to continue teaching. Elizaveta Pachina Alumni Experiences Teaching Ideas I have never met a person who is not interested in languages because of their attraction. Learning a foreign language appropriately, correctly, and faster is the concern of most non-native speakers, which propelled them to seek effective methods for learning languages. This process yielded a new field of research called Computer-Aided Language learning or CALL, which is "the use of computational methods and techniques as well as new media for language learning and teaching." Consequently, most modern learning languages focus on technology applications, where using computers and electronic devices plays an important role in the learning process. In this essay, I will solely focus on using computers as an Aided Language Learning tool....  [Read more]

Elizaveta Pachina Alumni Experiences I have been fascinated by the ESA approach to teaching English as a foreign language. I believe that as Jeremy Harmer codified the concept, he provided an amazing guide for teachers in all areas of education how they can best effectively and engage students in whatever subject they are presenting. This post was written by our TEFL certification graduate Douglas G. Please note that this blog post might not necessarily represent the beliefs or opinions of ITTT. I have had an opportunity to “teach” for years now in various formal and informal situations, including formal religious classes, teaching teachers how to effectively teach, workshops regarding business growth and marketing, effective communication, as well as co-authoring a best selling...  [Read more]

Elizaveta Pachina Teaching Ideas Many people who speak English are aware of the fact that American English and British English are similar yet different. There have been many debates about which one is better or correct. Some ways of speaking might be different if one would be speaking British English compared to American English. This post was written by our TEFL certification graduate Camilla R. Please note that this blog post might not necessarily represent the beliefs or opinions of ITTT. British English has used its way of spelling words adopted from the French spelling, such as ‘color’ and ‘humor’. While in American English, the spelling has been simplified to become ‘color’ and ‘humor’. There are many more examples of the American simplifying British words;...  [Read more]

Linda Dunsmore Alumni Experiences I decided to write about the subject I’m an expert in, my personal teaching experience. The focus will be on what I’ve gained from the last nine years as an EFL instructor. I’ll begin by telling you about my first teaching position in rural South Korea. Next, I’ll share my experience taking the TEFL course. Finally, I’ll discuss my efforts to become an independent online English instructor. I hope my experience can provide some insight into some of the many options for EFL teachers. This post was written by our TEFL certification graduate Karissa B. Jon ITTT Alumni Experiences A few weeks ago, I was pondering on what was required for me to have a successful TEFL teaching career. I came to the conclusion that I needed to start from the beginning and complete a TEFL course. There were many different TEFL courses being offered on several websites. I compared several different TEFL courses and finally decided on the TEFL course offered by the International TEFL and TESOL Training (ITTT), as it appeared to provide the best overall value in terms of quality, rating, resources, and cost. For a beginner TEFL teacher, I think there are several advantages for completing the TEFL course. First, it provides me with the essential teaching tools and materials that I will need to teach classes. Secondly, I also wanted to learn the different...  [Read more]

Elizaveta Pachina Alumni Experiences There are many reasons why a person might be interested in becoming TEFL certified. Initially, I only really had one reason, is that it’d be an interesting way to start my career as a teacher and would determine if this was something I wanted to do with a big portion of my life. One of my major life goals is revamping the American education system and making it more efficient, especially on the public-school level. I’ve learned a decent amount about how education is handled in several countries outside of America and while no system is perfect, there are things we could be doing better. By finding a TEFL job in another country I’d be able to gain experience as a teacher as well as study teaching methods outside of the American education system,...  [Read more]

Nadiia Dovbnia Destinations Alumni Experiences I have been working in China as an English teacher almost for half a year. When the outbreak began, I decided to stay in China. At first, I thought it would be like a seasonal flu quarantine back in my country, Ukraine, when schools are closed for just a week or two. However, the situation got worse and I realized that it might be safer to stay inside my city than to go through the train stations and airports. Shops gave no signs of opening after the New Year, busses were just passing by the stops on their way to the bus park, communities were closed for the non-residents, in one day you got more temperature checks that in a few months. Every movement has been noted down from the moment I left my community until I got my final temperature...  [Read more]

Elizaveta Pachina Teaching Ideas In the following essay, I consider something like a continuum from task to the game to assessment, but only in the bookend learning moments of “input” and “output.” I often think of learners in my classrooms as a gray box—not quite a “black box,” the inner workings of which are completely mysterious, but a thing into which we only ever have uncertain, provisional insight. We can do all sorts of theorizing about language acquisition and psychometry but will never have anything as exact as a litmus test. However accurate my notion is, it motivates me to focus on things that are much more knowable and observable: the inputs and outputs of a learning situation. Elizaveta Pachina Teaching Ideas Are you a near-native English speaker and looking for an English teaching job in East Asia? Beware of the very requirement you will face in countless job ads that can even put you off from applying for any TEFL jobs. I am quite confident that you can guess what that requirement is. Being an English native speaker! According to my personal experience in Thailand, what you might see in all those ads is more about holding the passport of one of the English speaking countries rather than language proficiency and teaching skills. It seems that requiring you to be native to be able to apply is not even enough for them. Sometimes they make it even more frustrating by restricting the list of the countries and narrowing it down to a maximum of 5 or 6 countries....  [Read more]

Hadassah Roberts Alumni Experiences Teaching Ideas As an English teacher, you may find yourself accepting the call to teach in a remote village or town in any part of the world where the inhabitants are more or less secluded from urban society. Often you may also find that the house you move into is a dry cabin. A dry cabin is when a house has no well or septic and yet is deemed livable—my experience in a dry cabin. I used to live in a dry cabin because, in Alaska, there are many dry cabins. My house was clean, neat, and cozy, and at first sight, you would never have guessed it to be a dry cabin. It was fun to live there, and it helped me to appreciate many more things in life that I previously had taken for granted. At first, I had no idea how to cope without a well or septic, but...  [Read more]
