So you are in two minds whether or not to do a “Teaching English as a Foreign Language” course. I get it, I was there as well. Trust me, I understand; that’s a lot of money to outlay, and what’s more, you don’t even know if you are going to pass the course.
Any of those statements or questions starting to sound familiar? Let me tell you a bit about those statements and questions; those statements and questions completely disappear once you commit to your future. And when I say “completely disappear” I mean, you don’t even think about them again until you are asked to write a blog about your experience whilst studying.
First, I’ll give you a bit of background on myself, trusting that you’ll be able to... [Read more]

Please let me know where in your TEFL journey you are at right now? Are you currently taking a course? Are you thinking of taking a course? Are you already teaching English as a foreign language? That'd also be really cool to know—somebody from Brazil, UK. Two people are from Brazil awesome, okay, with Bolivia amazing UK, Philippines, somebody is also from South Korea.
A lot of people are thinking of enrolling, great! Then, this life will be perfect for you. Somebody is from Canada, Mexico, and Mongolia. This is our second live Q&A sort of video that we've been doing. We started last week, and last week we sort of did a general kind of... [Read more]

Strictly speaking the answer is no, you do not have to possess a TEFL certificate in order to find work as an English language teacher. In some countries around the world it is still possible to secure employment simply by being a native English speaker. However, there are several reasons why we would strongly recommend that you complete a TEFL training course before you set off to teach English abroad. In recent years many popular destinations for EFL teachers have begun to tighten the requirements necessary for teaching English in schools and language centers. A recognized TEFL certificate is now required in order to secure a work permit in many countries, whilst the ever growing number of teachers with a TEFL Qualification means that employers in the majority of countries... I have run my own businesses for many years. I used to have my staff tell people when they called looking for me “Tell anyone that is looking for me that I’m on a course” This has it appear I was always looking to better myself, and technically I wasn’t telling lies because I was on a golf course. That was back in the day. Since those days I have done more than 50 different “educational” courses. One could say I have some experience in the area of courses.
I had the idea to do the 120-hour course before Christmas 2019. I did the first three units of that course before I was pulled away by my business, and it was March 2020 until I could get back into the course. (My wife... [Read more]

There are thousands of English coursebooks nowadays, and one might get confused while trying to choose a coursebook for the students. I have faced this problem as well, trying to choose the coursebook for private classes with a 7-year-old student who has already learned some English before.

As far as I am concerned, Oxford University Press is known to be one of the best ESL coursebook «producers» in the world. One of their best courses is «Family and Friends» which had been developed into «Family and Friends 2nd edition», a highly-popular course... [Read more]

There are many reasons why a person might be interested in becoming TEFL certified. Initially, I only really had one reason, is that it’d be an interesting way to start my career as a teacher and would determine if this was something I wanted to do with a big portion of my life. One of my major life goals is revamping the American education system and making it more efficient, especially on the public-school level. I’ve learned a decent amount about how education is handled in several countries outside of America and while no system is perfect, there are things we could be doing better. By finding a TEFL job in another country I’d be able to gain experience as a teacher as well as study teaching methods... [Read more]

I had been the owner of a tourism business in Bali, Indonesia when Covid-19 came along and spoiled all the fun. It was time to take my business and personal coaching skills from a previous life and build a new income stream.
Having just completed the 120-hour online TEFL course in March 2020, I had the thought, “yeah okay I’ll do that Young Learners course offered by ITTT”. I did that course, and then quickly followed up with the Business English course, before applying for more than 22 online teaching positions over two days. I naively thought I was ready to go for online teaching positions with those qualifications.
Of those 22 positions I applied for, one came back to me within days and said, “Thanks but no... [Read more]

Studies consistently indicate that confidence is a significant predictor of academic performance. Confident students pay more attention in class, get along better with their peers and generally have a more focused and inquisitive attitude.

Depending on which part of the world you are in, more often than not, you will find that majority of your learners, especially the younger ones, tend to be very tech-savvy nowadays. This is especially true in a Prep-Year setting in Saudi Arabia, where I'm currently based. When I speak about a Prep-Year location, I refer to young adults between the ages of 18-20 who have just finished high school and must complete a year of English language studies to begin their major.

From my experience, when you deal with older ESL learners, you have to take into account the fact that they do not want to look bad while practicing their English skills. Actually, activities and exercises should make them feel at ease and confident in their learning, as well as satisfied with the goals achieved so far. It goes without saying that the teaching techniques that include a direct confrontation between an adult student and the teacher or a classmate as a judge of their performance should be avoided so as not to make them feel uncomfortable. Here are a few ideas for you to try.
Unless your learners are really shy, almost all of... [Read more]

Hello, it's Liza here. While I'm waiting for more people to join us let me introduce myself for those who will watch it as a recording. So my name is Liza and I am a TEFL expert at ITTT. I am also a self-employed online ESL teacher. I am a non-native English speaker and I am based in Yekaterinburg, Russia. I hope that today's session will be useful for as many people as possible, because it basically covers one of the most controversial topics in TEFL certification. So the main point of today's session is what are some differences between TEFL and TESOL, and other certifications such as CELTA and DELTA.
Please let me know if you can hear me clearly and see me well, there is a chat box so you can communicate with me... [Read more]
