In this article, we share the most common teaching mistakes that even experienced teachers do in their everyday work. Read what are they and how to avoid them.
Teacher Talk Time (short: TTT) is an important teaching point and skill to practice. The more a teacher talks, the less the students have time to work on their speaking abilities during the lesson. Reducing TTT depends on proper planning, so remember to focus on preparing your lesson plan in advance.
TTT shouldn’t be used as a time filler when a student prepares to answer, so it is better to accept silence and let the classroom be quiet for a moment.
Lessons usually get messed up due to unclear instructions. Pay attention to the way you explain tasks and... [Read more]

However, to use videos during the online ESL lessons, it is essential to follow several rules that our TEFL expert shares in this article.
Before watching videos, think carefully about the exercises you’ll give to your student and the purpose of this activity.

First lessons are always a little bit overwhelming because the students and teacher don’t know each other yet. That's why it’s very important to break the ice and help your ESL learners to relax. Plus, for future planning, you need to learn more about your students and their likes and dislikes. Get-to-know games are great for these purposes and work best if you play them during the first 3-5 lessons.
For this activity, give your students two opposite words to choose between and ask a question “Are you more like 1 or 2?”. This way, you find out a little bit more about your students and the students also can bond among themselves.

You can then also have them write up a schedule of their daily routines and share their findings with the class later on in a class discussion.

Throughout my ITTT TEFL course a specific teaching concept persisted, entitled “ESA”. This methodology has been proven over several years to be effective in teaching English to students in the classroom. A precursor to this concept was “PPP” (Presentation, Practice, Production) which has been used by many teachers, though it lacks in engaging the students resulting in a less successful environment. Jeremy Harmer noticed this and in turn put forth a new and improved model, labeled “ESA”, consisting of three steps; Engage, Study, and Activate. This methodology has continued to remain relevant to this day through its flexible and fluid approach to teaching English.
