Establishing a rapport with my students has been the most ‘natural’ part of my teaching experience. When I started my teaching career about ten years ago, ideas like classroom management and lesson planning were alien to me. I struggled immensely trying to learn strategies to excel in that area of education. Establishing relationships with my students was easy and always seemed to just happen for me. As the years have passed, I’ve been able to reflect on my time in the classroom and I’ve discovered some common denominators relating to me why exactly students are drawn to me (and me to them!). I think other people can learn from my interactions with the students who have passed through my classroom.

An obvious difference between teaching English to high-school students and university students in the organization. Class sizes at a school are usually limited to about 25 students and we have to check the attendance because it is compulsory. The timetable and the syllabus are fixed. At a university, the groups are often much bigger, and the teacher can arrange the syllabus more freely.

In my opinion, the greatest difference is the age of the students and how the teacher must adapt to it. Most of the university students are over 18 years old. They are... [Read more]

One of the main differences between teaching groups and individual students is the lesson plan.
Several factors need to be considered when planning a lesson for a single student:
The aforementioned factors should be taken into account even when teaching groups but in one-to-one lessons they are crucial. Considering that the whole lesson is dedicated to one individual, material covered should be graded to his/her exact level to achieve the best result, giving the teacher freedom to make the lessons challenging to stimulate further self-study.

Lesson planning means that the teacher establishes his/her credibility. It shows that you are organized, structured, have thought about what you are going to do, and understand your area of expertise.
This post was written by our TEFL certification graduate Roberto G.
Like all things in life that involve a group of human beings, 100% success is almost impossible. Improvising due to unforeseen circumstances is a skill a teacher needs but it is NOT a valid excuse for not planning your lessons.
• You may find your lesson plan needs to be adjusted during the class. It is your call whether you let it happen or not.
• If you really have to improvise and adjust the lesson plan, try to get back to the plan as soon... [Read more]

TEFL teachers both new and experienced will benefit from having a range of course books to draw on for their lessons. General English course books for young learners differ from those for adults in a number of ways. Obviously the types of topics will be geared towards the interests of younger people but there are also differences in the way the language is presented. Course books for adults will generally have sections with explicit presentations of a grammar point, whereas books for young learners do not usually cover grammar in detail.
There are several publishers involved in producing general English course books for young learners. The main publishers are Oxford University Press,... [Read more]

When thinking of teaching, adults generally don’t come to mind. Teachers are associated with children, and people might often associate their childhood with teachers and schooling, either good or bad. There are quite obvious differences between adults and children that make for different teaching environments and experiences.

An obvious example is the use of singing or chanting, which even after children reach a certain age shouldn’t be used. The use of music and songs, however, can still be utilized, by emphasizing lyrics and the use of tenses, as... [Read more]

Whether speaking at a public event where thousands have gathered, or talking politics around a table with friends, this simple piece of advice is well-known to anyone who has ever done any public speaking. But, it is also critical advice for the aspiring teacher—whether those teaching English as a second language, or those teaching chemistry in high school. The more well-acquainted a teacher is with his or her classroom, the more successful he or she will be in engaging their minds in the topic at hand.

I would like to divide groups of learners into 4 categories: children (from 5 to 12 years old), teenagers (from 12 to 18 years old), adults (from 18 to 60 years old) and seniors (from 60+). I had the chance to teach all of those groups in some points of my life. The conclusion of this experience made me see the major difference in the abilities and motivation among those 4 different groups.

Teaching is a challenging labor that requires different factors to do it properly. First of all, the person who teaches has to have the vocation to help others. Otherwise, either the teacher or the students will enjoy the classes. Then, a teacher has to have clear that there are several aspects that the university does not prepare the teacher students.

I have been in China for four years; I came here on 15, September 2015, as a student. During this time pursuing my Master’s degree, I taught English as a foreign language in training centers, elementary school, high school and currently teaching in a Polytechnics.
English has become one of the fastest growing subjects in the country. Many Chinese students study the subject at schools and training centers. It is also interesting to note that most of the universities teach some other subjects in English. This attracts many students from other countries to study in China or have an exchange program.

Two and a half years ago, if my friends and family had asked me what kind of job I wanted to do or what kind of career I wanted to pursue, I never would have said the words ‘English teacher’. Stories expose the students to more language, they engage and motivate the learner, they can be used to teach the structure of a language and the concepts about print which may be different between cultures. Stories with images can also help the students anchor their knowledge about the text. Listening to stories also helps the students hear accents and how words are pronounced. However, it is important to choose the correct book or story for the students you are working with. If familiar storylines are chosen the student is more likely to understand the story. It is also important to take into consideration the interests of the students and to find text on those topics.
