Young learners and adults tend to have different modes when it comes to English learning due to several factors. This article is going to demonstrate some of the factors.

Young learners are a special group of people in English learning and have to be treated differently because they are unique in several ways. First, young learners tend to be self- motivated as they are always curious, and curiosity is a motivation factor and important in new language learning. Second, young learners are less conscious of potential mistakes and have a sense of... [Read more]

What is phonology? Most students have not even heard about it. Whenever I ask my students whether they know or have ever learned about phonetics, the same answers come out, “No, we don’t know about it at all”. It is no wonder they reply like this because there is no phonetic teaching lesson in English classes from KG to high school here in my country. As for me, I got to study about this only when I attended college. Even then, it wasn’t taught comprehensively and I only learned very little. So I couldn’t read nor write phonetic symbols very well. Thus I thought it was the most difficult part of studying English.

A teacher’s job is to teach pupils. While that sounds straight forward the question arises what makes a good teacher. If a teacher teaches all day, the outcome of the work lies in what was being taught. Pupils are taught what the teacher teaches. Now an easy thing to say is, that a good teacher should provide good teaching. But what would be, if the majority of students would not learn anything in a specific lesson, that would be regarded by other teachers as good teaching? The answer, of course, is, that all students are individuals and respond differently to the teaching. Making it dependent on the students, a more practical definition of good teaching is: Good teaching is, which makes the pupils learn and... [Read more]

What kind of teacher do you want to become? Can you picture it in your mind?
Well, I did it! When I first started my journey as a Portuguese and English online tutor, I asked myself this question and it landed me on a few ideas which are also present over some units of the ESL teachers course. I've been a student for a while, and I am still today. This year, I merged in the education field, taken this bright decision had brought me a lot of joy.

Scientists think that some jobs will disappear because of new technology. It is said that technology will change the world of work. For example, a robot will take part in people’s work. But what about teachers? Will they be taken away from their jobs? I don’t think so because robots are very good at technical work, but they aren’t very good at dealing with people. That’s the reason why we must learn teaching skills.

One of my favorite aspects of teaching is the role of the teacher in the classroom. To some, the role of the teacher is only to teach people information that they then regurgitate during a later exam. However, to me, teaching is a fascinating profession because a teacher is many things to many different students.

When it comes to an ESL (English Second Language) class, the first thing we should remember is that non-native speakers are normally deprived of the level of confidence they need to fulfill their learning potential in its entirety. This is why it’s important for a teacher to provide them with an appropriate background at a stretch of a lesson, favorable atmosphere and an opportunity to move at their own pace.

Back in Autumn 2017, I faced another career change. To bring the story right to the point of this topic, I, eventually, was guided into the teaching profession by sheer coincidence, or as some would call it, synchronicity. Shortly after my first initial contact with a person in a nice car passing me on a side street, I was approached by other parents and institutions and was asked if I would be interested to teach them English. I said that I need to think about it first and prepare some documentation. So, I went back home, changed, and prepared my C.V. to match it with the opportunity currently at hand and contacted them shortly after. In the few discussions, get-togethers, and meetings that followed I... [Read more]

Any profession requires preparation and skills, but most of all, confidence. Hence, teachers should develop the confidence to achieve their aims in their profession and their lives. Thus, if a teacher lacks confidence, it can become a relevant issue in its profession. Moreover, it could harm the learning process of the students. Thereby, how can teachers increase their confidence in the classroom?

Teaching is not generally a lucrative profession, because in Africa we have strange financial priorities. But there are so many countries out there that make teaching quite a better living particularly teaching the English language as a foreign language. I don't think and neither do I believe that one can just wake up and call himself or herself into a particular field without training. Fully ingrained should one be, call himself or herself an English language teacher and this can not be achieved without education.

There are many benefits for teachers who choose to teach English online instead of in a traditional classroom setting. English is an international commodity, and there are a billion people right now who are learning English. By teaching English online, enables the teacher to make a real difference in student's lives, whether they are studying for a specific test to get into a U.S. university, need to interview school or a job, need to communicate with others within their company in English or even if their family is emigrating to an English-speaking country.

When teaching students most of the time we mainly focus on just teaching them the language and having them pass some tests and that is how we measure if they have learned well or not. In reality, it is a bit different though. Knowing how to read, speak or write a language does not necessarily translate to the student excelling in the language. There is another often ignored factor called confidence. Confidence is necessary for success in many parts of life and it is no different when learning. One of the greatest gifts we can give our students is to instill in them a strong sense of confidence. In doing this, we enable them to be higher achievers.

Are you a near-native English speaker and looking for an English teaching job in East Asia? Beware of the very requirement you will face in countless job ads that can even put you off from applying for any TEFL jobs. I am quite confident that you can guess what that requirement is. Being an English native speaker! According to my personal experience in Thailand, what you might see in all those ads is more about holding the passport of one of the English speaking countries rather than language proficiency and teaching skills. It seems that requiring you to be native to be able to apply is not even enough for them. Sometimes they make it even more frustrating by restricting the list of the countries and narrowing it... Teaching children can sound fun from the first sight, however, it is a difficult job, because young learners are not that fluent in their own language when they start learning the second one. The age group that I want to consider in this essay is from 3 to 7, the kindergarten age.
Parents make a decision to send their kids to learn English in a kindergarten thus kids are not motivated. A teacher can motivate children by making lessons entertaining and interesting. Games can make lessons fun for kids and productive for learning instead of common words drilling, for instance ‘What’s missing?’ game is very amusing for children to play and it prompts them to practice the target words. Active tasks encourage... [Read more]

Distraction is not the only obstacle to the class, boredom and absenteeism don’t help the class either.
To prevent those behaviors, students need to be motivated, which is every teacher's challenge. While all students have different backgrounds and expectations, the teacher still has plenty of resources to tease students' attention and increase their participation.

As a Spaniard in love with languages, I can’t start this essay without saying anything other than, "it’s not who the teacher is, but the will of teaching that they have". Through all these years of learning English, I just know for sure that a learner learns more when they live in and with the language throughout each day. They need to become hooked to it, and it does not matter if the person who transmits this feeling is a native speaker or not.

Language is the main part of our identities as human beings. It provides us to connect to another person, learn about our roots from the written and unwritten side in the world. Historically, language has been linked to culture, customs, and beliefs. Also, people need to get in touch with each other to communicate and continue their social world. Therefore, they use the language. From the past to today, one of the biggest effects on language is that technology which brings people closer and creating the global world. There are many good things I have learned from the TEFL course I have been taking this past month. Things I had never considered before as a skill is to be a good teacher. I had mentioned it before in my tests that I did not realize how important it is to have those skills until I started taking the course and had read about it.
