Mexico borders the USA and therefore the demand for native English teachers is huge throughout the country. This means that TEFL qualified teachers find it easy to obtain employment. Those having business experience will find it even more of an advantage, especially in the larger cities. More often than not a university degree and a 4 week internationally recognised TEFL/TESOL certificate are required. Although some of the bigger language schools will offer employment to teachers who hold a TEFL certificate alone. At the top end, most universities prefer a Master’s Degree in TEFL or education.

Employment teaching English in Mexico can be sought from abroad and telephone interviews are common, although attending an interview by person is preferred. Many teachers obtain employment in primary/secondary schools or the private sector, but the majority of opportunities are based in universities and private language schools. Universities offer the highest salaries and usually provide more fringe benefits to their employees, but rates of pay, benefits and personal terms can vary hugely. There are more language schools than universities in Mexico and therefore it is easier to find a job at such schools at nearly any time throughout the year. They also do not require much previous teaching experience. Universities usually only seek teachers of English immediately prior to each new term.
